  •     Tonight, two area organizations will join forces to help commemorate Sexual Assault Awareness Month with an event aimed at raising awareness of and preventing sexual violence.
On Tuesday, April 1, Maternal and Family Health Services and the Honesdale-based Victims’ Intervention Program will host, “Time To Talk About It: A Forum and Festival on Teen Sexuality” in the Hawley Silk Mill. A fun, teen-friendly event will educate teens 13 and up about healthy relationships, consent and sexual health.
The two-hour long forum starts at 5 p.m. in the Hawley Silk Mill, just steps away from MFHS Circle of Care health center. For more information on the event, visit Maternal & Family Health Services’ teen health website, SafeTeens.org.
In the United States, one in four women and one in six men are sexually assaulted before the age of 18. Against this backdrop, the forum features educational booths with games promoting healthy behaviors, live music by local hip-hop artist Alex Ramos, an age-appropriate text message questions and answers with health and relationship experts along with food and refreshments. Teens will have the opportunity to get involved with local violence prevention efforts, as well as win over $100 in gift cards and prizes.
It’s Time To Talk About It is made possible in part through Project Connect, a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services-sponsored initiative charged with improving public health responses to domestic and sexual violence.
Maternal & Family Health Services is a non-profit health and human service organization that spans 16 Pennsylvania counties with programs that help women, children and families gain access to health and nutrition services. At its comprehensive Circle of Care site in Hawley, Pennsylvania, MFHS offers many of its programs to Wayne County residents in one coordinated setting.        Victims’ Intervention Program is a Honesdale-based organization that offers services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
