  • Presentations planned on gambling addiction

  • WAYNE COUNTY - The Wayne County Area Agency on Aging will host a gambling and gambling addiction  program Monday, April 7 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the  Professional WIN/LINK meeting at Cordaro's Restaurant in Honesdale.
       The training is for professionals as a simple way to screen and detect gambling problems with consumers.
        In addition, meetings are planned specifically for senior citizens and meetings for cargivers and families concerned about friends or loved ones that may have a gambling problem.
    ••• Meetings for caregivers, and for seniors
        Wayne County has three senior center locations, where there will be two events at each location. The morning session will be for staff, caregivers and family members of seniors who would like to learn more about the problem signs of gambling. The second session at each center will be for seniors to identify possible signs of gambling problems with their friends or loved ones and also help them with what to do if they think someone they know has a gambling problem.
       The meetings will occur:
    • Wednesday, April 9 at 323 Tenth Street in Honesdale, call (570) 253-4262 for information.

       The professional, caregivers and family members meeting will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. For senior center participants the time will be from 11 a.m. to noon.
        The educational programs for seniors will be a chance to learn about the gaming industry, how to keep it fun if gambling and potential gambling issues.
        The sessions will go over the 10 rules of responsible gambling and share a little bit about how the gaming industry targets certain groups of people, like older adults or youth. Professionals will  discuss simple ways to screen for and detect a gambling problem.

        Event presenter, Michael D. Donahue, CADC, ICADC has been a leader in the world of chemical dependency for over three decades, He brings an abundance of knowledge and expertise of the disease of addiction. Donahue served as the SCA Administrator of the Luzerne-Wyoming Counties Drug and Alcohol Program. Among his responsibilities as SCA administrator, he was charged with complete oversight of all contracted drug and alcohol providers in these regions, identifying and supervising grant-processing activities with state and federal agencies and developing industry-specific programs to meet the needs of the community.
    Page 2 of 2 -     More recently in his career, Donahue served as the executive director of Pocono Mountain Recovery Center in Henryville, PA and program director of CHOICES of Kingston, PA where he supervised all addiction disorder programming and he coordinated all contracting and regulatory bodies' inspections for the programming at those facilities. Donahue also directed referral development activities, acting as the primary liaison with several state-wide agencies.
        Since the 1990's, Donahue has been a DDAP approved trainer and has since added pathological gambling series to his list of approved trainings. Donahue has trained numerous groups on the treatment and community issues related to compulsive gambling. Upon DDAP's request, Donahue has also developed a compulsive gambling overview training. Donahue has facilitated the overview training to DDAP's staff and at a statewide DDAP sponsored student assistance program conference. Finally, Donahue has facilitated trainings for the Luzerne/Wyoming Counties Area Office on Aging and Mental Health/ Intellectual Development staffs and consumers on the consequences of problem gambling.
