  • The Lackawaxen Township Fire Commission held a "stuffing party" Thursday evening, April 3, in advance of mailing their Spring Fund Appeal.   According to Al Petrillo, Chairman of the Fund Raising Committee, almost 60 volunteers assembled at Central Fire House to stuff envelopes, affix mailing labels and prepare over 6,600 flyers to be delivered to the Post Office the next day.  This is the third year of the Commission's consolidated fund appeal and they are hoping to continue their record of being able to donate more than the year before to each of their member volunteer fire departments.  Members of the Central, Forest and Lackawaxen VFD's came together with members of the Lackawaxen EMS as part of an assembly line process that was able to get the job done in record time.  Before the departments decided to consolidate their efforts, each one sent out individual mailings which more often than not resulted in duplicate mailings and postage, as well as the expenditure of several hours of valuable volunteer time.  However, this time the job was done in under two hours.  Many hands do indeed make light work.  Once the returns come in, all three fire departments will share equally in the proceeds.  The Commission is hoping that the Township's residents will respond as generously as possible in keeping with the spirit of cooperation that has marked the consolidated fund appeal since its inception.
    ••• Gelderman honored
One of the high points of the evening was the presentation of a Certificate of Appreciation to long time Fire Commission member Fred Gelderman.  A former Supervisor in Lackawaxen Township and Officer in Central VFD, Fred was instrumental in helping to establish the Fire Commission several years ago.  Since that time, he has been an active supporter and helped bring a number of Commission initiatives to fruition, including the standardization of operating guidelines and volunteer application forms as well as the consolidated fund appeal itself.  Fred has served as the Central VFD representative to the Fire Commission, but since moving from Lackawaxen Township, he felt the department's and the Commission's interests would be better served by having his position filled by someone else.   In presenting the award, Commission President John Kerkowski said Fred's sage advice and tireless efforts in support of the Commission's work will be sorely missed. John added that whoever replaces Fred will have a big job ahead of them carrying on his legacy.
