WALLENPAUPACK - As part of finalizing career plans, Nickole Mann job shadowed Wallenpaupack Primary School counselor, Mr. Ed Martin. After meeting with Nickole to discuss the education requirements she would need to meet to become a counselor, Martin introduced Nickole to the different responsibilities he has to his primary students.

To see as many aspects of his occupation as possible, Nickole observed as Mr. Martin screened a student, conducted a support group, and taught a Developing Understanding of Self and Others (DUSO) lesson. The focus of this lesson was to help students cope with rejection so that the kindergarteners and first graders understood how to express their feelings and resolve them positively.

Nicki commented on the many struggles young students are facing and how difficult it is for guidance counselors to address all of their needs. From this experience, Mann discovered that she will most likely work with older students: “Younger students have much more difficulty expressing their feelings. I am glad that I had the opportunity to observe a guidance counselor at the primary level. With Mr. Martin’s many years of experience, he offered me excellent insight and was extremely helpful.”
