  • LACKAWAXEN- At the March Lackawaxen Township meeting, township residents expressed their frustrations regarding the condition the Towpath Road. In response to the public's concern, Lackawaxen Supervisors have created a petition to “Save the Towpath.”
Towpath Road, also known as State Route 4006, is slated only for routine maintenance this year, said Michael Taluto, PennDOT District #4 spokesman. He said this includes pothole patching. SR 4006, he said, was on their "10-year list" to be paved at some point in the next few years.
Supervisor Mike Mancino wrote in an email, “the facts are simple; the once scenic byway is a mess and PennDOT does not have the funds to repair it. We can all understand this, but it doesn’t have to be the end of the conversation.”  The peitition can be found at http://chn.ge/1g4tO8Z.
Mancino also wrote concerning the petition, “It may not be the final solution, but it is a great beginning. Please Share, Tweet, Post, Re-Post and spread the word. Every signature counts …….. together, everything is possible. Hey, you never know.”
One woman who resides in Lackawaxen Township who asked to be anonymous commented about PennDOT's plan to only do maintenance to the Towpath Road this year.  "Their response is totally unacceptable! Patch work is just throwing the money in an abyss," she said. "The road is so bad that it needs a sub-layer before they repave the entire road. This road has been neglected while the road to Woodloch is pristine!"
She continued, "The people in our community should be outraged.  We don’t want to hear about a lack of resources cause if we needed roads to be salted they’d find the funds cause its a safety issue. This road is a safety issue as well. Take funds from other sources if necessary -as if our taxes aren’t enough.   Money talks - walks. I’m sure contractors would agree that the above is the proper way to repair the road – which was washed away from the bad winter we had."
Taluto said that PennDOT would look at the petition once it is submitted.
