  • MILFORD -  Milford Borough is about to have a county-run senior citizen's center.
Pike County Area Agency on Aging (AAA) is opening the center in the new Pike County Public Library at l19 East Harford Street. Lana Romeo, Activity & Program Director, announced at Commissioners' meeting that they expect to be open June 11th, with a "grand opening" to be scheduled in July.
Their schedule will be Wednesdays and Fridays, from about 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. She said they will have a lunch program, speakers, and an exercise program, similar to what they offer at the other centers, at the Blooming Grove Center in Lords Valley, Lackawaxen/Shohola Township Center  and Delaware Township Center.
An administrator for the Milford center has not been named yet.
Romeo said they applied for a grant to operate the new center, but did not expect to hear if the application was approved, for a couple weeks.
She said that the Pike AAA looked at many possible locations in Milford. The Library, she said, was most gracious in opening their doors to them, at no charge.
The announcement was made in timing with a proclamation issued by the Governor naming May 2014 as Older Pennsylvanians Month. The theme this year picked by the PA Department of Aging is "Safe Today, Healthy Tomorrow," focusing attention on sustaining the healthy active status of our older adult population.
Pennsylvania has 2.7 million adults age 60 and older.
Romeo is also PrimeTime Health Coordinator for Pike AAA. The state's PrimeTime Health program is offered at the Pike centers through such activities as Healthy Steps in Motion and fall prevention programs.
She also announced a few other highlights at the senior centers.
A pilot adult day care program will be tried on Wednesdays at the Delaware Township Center, 116 Wilson Hill Dr., Dingmans Ferry. This is meant for adults who can't be left home alone, Romeo said.
A pet parade is planned Thursday, June 19 at the Blooming Grove Center. If you wish you can dress your pet for a chance at a prize for the "Prettiest" or "Most Original."
The 2014 Senior Olympics games will be held on two days and locations: Thursday, May 15, 10 a.m.- 1 p.m., Palmyra Township Park, Paupack, and Friday, May 16, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m., Delaware Valley High School Track.
There are age categories, of 55-64; 65-74; 75-84 and 85 & up. Events include tennis, bocce ball, horseshoes, softball throw, baseball throw, basketball shoot, bean bag throw, football throw walking, bingo and dance. There will be Gold, Silver and Bronze winners in each event.
