  • BLOOMING GROVE TWP. - Ceremonial groundbreaking was held May 29th in Blooming Grove Township, Pike County, for the new headquarters of Kahr Firearms Group. The major manufacturer of handguns as well as the famed Thompson submachine gun also plans to start making guns here within five years, eventually employing approximately 100 people at the Pike County site.
Lt. Governor James Cawley was on hand, along with legislators and numerous county and local officials, welcoming Kook Jin "Justin" Moon, founder as well as president and CEO of Kahr Firearms Group (of which Kahr Arms is a part) and the economic boost this venture is seen to represent.
The affair was filled with patriotism, with a parade of Colors, the Pledge of Allegiance and singing of God Bless America. The proud American tradition of gun ownership prevailed. Examples of firearms produced by Kahr Arms were shown, including two special, gold-plated commemorative Tommy Guns.
As Moon said in his remarks to the guests under the barbecue tent, "When good people carry guns, bad people think twice."
Last year, in 2013, Kahr Arms purchased the entire Pike County Business Park for $2 million. The park comprises 620 acres on the north side of Well Road. The park had never been developed, sitting empty for over 10 years.
    ••• Good for economy
The arrival of Kahr Arms in Pike County, said Lt. Governor Cawley, is an example that Pennsylvania is "moving in the right direction."  He said this would send a clear message to the United States and the world that "Pennsylvania is open for business."
Cawley, as well as Governor Tom Corbett is currently running for re-election. He cited economic progress in the state, noting that unemployment in Pennsylvania was 5.7%, the lowest in five years. To aid those who still need jobs, he said the aim is to encourage the private business sector- the"true wealth creators"- to come and prosper in this state.
Pennsylvania, he said, is a great place to live but can be even better. He commended Kahr Firearms Group for making the choice to be part of Pennsylvania's future.
Senator Lisa Baker said she was proud to welcome the company, which she called "the right fit, the right time and the right location." She expressed hope this would be a catalyst for further investment in the region.
Rep. Mike Peifer (139th) referred to this development as a success story for Pike County. Rep. Rosemary Brown (189th) said she was proud of Kahr Firearms Group and its products, for what they contribute to this nation.
Pete Helms, President and Owner of Davis R. Chant Realtors, recounted the day Moon approached him about possible sites in Pike County. This was in the winter of 2013. Moon had thought he looked at all possible sites. Helms made some calls to see if it was possible that the company could purchase not just one parcel in the business park, but the entire park.
Page 2 of 3 -    He said that the Moon family was "very gracious" and "great people to work with."
    •••  Favored PA over NY
On July 1, 2013 Kahr Firearms Group announced that it was leaving New York state because of the Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act. Moon stated in an interview that the laws in New York had become too restrictive for gun ownership. His firm wanted to work in a state that was more open to the Right to Bear Arms.
"Pennsylvania, northeast Pennsylvania, honors traditional American values," Moon said. "We're happy to be with those who are patriots and love freedom."
The plan is to first move their corporate offices from Rockland County, NY to Pike County, PA. Following this, in steps, they will relocate their research facilities, machine shop, web shop and retail shop here. By 2019 they plan to build a new factory here, to manufacture Tommy Guns, .22 long rifles, M1 carbines and the .22 Magnum handgun.
Research and development staff from their various locations including New York and Massachusetts will be transferred to the Pike County site.  By the end of five years he said they expect to employ about 100 people here.
The company hopes to bring other gun-related industries to the park over the next five years, adding to the potential for jobs.
Grimm Construction is the general contractor; Pioneer Construction is doing the site work.

    ••• Rev. Moon's son
Moon, who is 43, was born in South Korea, son of the Unification Church founder, the late Rev. Sun Myung Moon.
Justin Moon's brother, Rev. Hyung Jin Moon, was also present, and offered a prayer at the opening of the ceremony.
Justin stated that he has enjoyed firing guns since he was a kid. His own father enjoyed hunting. Sportsmanship is a family tradition, he stated.
In his address to the gathering, Moon referred to his father, "I would have never able to accomplish this without you. Love you, miss you Dad." Rev. Sun Myung Moon died in 2012.
Justin Moon and his wife Ji-Yea have made their home in Matamoras, Pike County.
    ••• Founded in 1994
Moon founded Kahr Firearms Group in 1994, first building and marketing a handgun of his own design. This was very successful, he said, and they were able to expand.
Moon is the sole owner of the firearms group which includes Kahr Arms, Magnum Research and Auto Ordnance. Auto-Ordinance Corp., maker of the Tommy Gun, was purchased in 1998; and Magnum Research, maker of the Desert Eagle, was purchased in 2010.
