  •   LACKAWAXEN TWP. - A Masthope Security Officer had to take evasive action to avoid being struck by an agitated motorist Friday night, May 30. The motorist, Paul Florek, 46, of Hawley, was arrested by State Police, Blooming Grove for DUI and Aggravated Assault.
The accused was stopped at about 9:30 p.m. by Masthope Security for traveling the wrong way on Karl Hope Boulevard, a traffic way that leads to Masthope Ski Area and lodge in Lackawaxen Township.
Florek became agitated and began to rev the engine, State Police said. He then placed the vehicle in reverse and began to back up toward the victim, Masthope Security Officer Jace Conklin. The officer was standing behind the vehicle. The accused ignored commands of the security officers to stop and nearly struck the victim, State Police reported.
The accused then turned around and drove to the top of the boulevard where he stopped and argued with the officers.
At that time the accused tried to leave again and placed the vehicle in drive. The car then lurched forward toward the victim who was standing outside of his car and in front of the accused's vehicle. Officer Conklin had to take evasive action to avoid being struck.
The accused continued to drive a short distance before stopping and eventually was restrained by officers.
Trooper Kevin Varcoe stated that the accused exhibited signs of intoxication and failed field sobriety tests on scene. The accused was transported to Wayne Memorial Hospital where he submitted to a blood test to determine his BAC. After being charged he was lodged in Pike County Correctional Facility to await arraignment.
