HONESDALE - They are often called the silent partners or the unsung heroes behind medical diagnoses: the 300,000 medical lab professionals across the United States who work behind the scenes of modern medicine.
According to the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), 70 percent of a patient’s medical record is composed of laboratory test results. The week of April 20-26, ASCP and the nation celebrate Medical Lab Professional Week to thank the technologists, technicians, phlebotomists and all pathology assistants who work on the frontline of disease detection and diagnosis.
Wayne Memorial Hospital Laboratory Services employs close to 60 lab professionals who performed 1.2 million tests last year under the direction of Chief Pathologist Lillian Longendorfer, DO, and Laboratory Services Manager John Romano. The hospital’s lab services more than 30 facilities in the region and offers blood draws at seven convenient sites in Wayne, Pike, Lackawanna and Susquehanna counties.
