WALLENPAUPACK - For the past 15 years Wallenpaupack Area Middle School students have put their knowledge to the ultimate test.  Students in Susan Capone’s, Family and Consumer Science classes have learned about the stages in Child Development.
They discussed the physical, intellectual and social/emotional developments of infants, toddlers and preschoolers.
Using the background knowledge students, develop an art project and a math or reading activity to teach to a child in Kindergarten.  Students are then paired with a kindergartener and “teach them” their lesson for about 35 minutes.
The one on one experience is wonderful for both age groups.  Kindergarteners get the individual attention that they desire while the 6th and 7th graders get a real life learning experience.
After working with the kindergarteners the 6th and 7th graders complete an evaluation on how their individual lesson went.
According to Mrs. Capone the Middle School students learn not only Child Development but much more, communication skills, time management, and organizational skills which students need in all aspects of their lives.
