  • What is a real father?

    • email print
  • It has been said that -- “Any man can father a child -- but -- it takes a Real Man to be the child’s DAD!” -- and -- set the example.
To be a Real Father is to be responsible for one’s actions -- to be loyal to the child’s mother -- to possess the ability to control his sexual appetite -- to follow through with the ability to afford to properly raise the child and support the family -- and to be willing to spend precious time seeing to their needs.
In the Old Testament the story of King David and his affair with another man’s wife (Bathsheba) -- and the subsequent death of the child conceived by this action -- points out the consequence of his lack of control.
On the other hand we read of Abraham’s blessing of God with the birth of Isaac the promised child -- and God’s special purpose for the delay.
Jacob’s 12 sons -- especially Joseph -- who carried the Israelites through periods of drought and need -- culminating the deliverance into the Promised Land.
In the New Testament the promised birth of John the Baptizer to Zacharias and Elizabeth, a barren couple with faith in God, that their son would be greatly used in answer to his father’s prayers.
And then there were Fathers greatly used of God -- but -- without even being named -- such as Timothy’s birth to his faithful mother Eunice and his grand-mother Lois.
Getting back to our opening paragraph and the responsibility of a Real Father -- it is amazing that the single parent birth-rate today in our country has passed the two parent norm and thousands of children are being raised in single parent homes when the father takes off and leaves the mother to rear the child.
It has been the plan of God from the very beginning in the Garden of Eden -- a two parent home -- one man and one woman -- and the father’s responsibility to provide for his family.
There is a very pointed statement by Jesus in the Book of John to consider the matter of fathers -- “Jesus said to them, If God were your Father, you would Love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God -- nor have I come of Myself, but He (God) sent Me. Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the Truth, because there is no Truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. Because I tell the Truth you do not believe Me” (vs.42-45).
Page 2 of 2 - WOW -- what pointed words from Jesus Himself, warning us all of exactly who we consider our Spiritual Father -- our Father God -- or -- our father the devil.
My thoughts go back to a statement spoken by the Prophet Joshua in answer to the question -- “choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve” -- and his very strong answer -- “BUT AS FOR ME AND MY HOUSE -- WE WILL SERVE THE LORD” (vs. 24:15).
We make choices every day -- some trivial and some serious -- here is one choice we must make that will affect our future for Eternity -- BE CAREFUL -- that you make the Right choice! Fathers, take your God-given responsibility.
Make this Father’s Day the best ever -- invite God to be your own PERSONAL FATHER -- and your own PERSONAL SAVIOR!
We close this article with the words of the Apostle Paul -- “For you did not receive the Spirit of bondage again to fear -- BUT -- you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out -- ABBA FATHER” (Romans 8:15).
“ABBA FATHER” is to cry out the very personal and intimate -- “DADDY!”
