WHITE MILLS -   On Thursday, July 17 at 11 a.m., the Dorflinger-Suydam Wildlife Sanctuary will host a ranger from the National Park Service who will speak about famous author Zane Grey and his home in Lackawaxen.
The presentation will be held in the Blough Building on the Sanctuary grounds.
It is the fourth program in the Sanctuary’s Lectures and Lunch series for 2014. A lunch will follow. There is no charge for the lecture, but there is a fee for the lunch (members of the Sanctuary $10; non-members $12). Reservations are necessary.
Please call 570-253-1185 or email suydam@ptd.net. Space is limited.
From 1973 until 1989, Helen James and her husband, artist Albert H. Davis, operated the Zane Grey Museum to display the Grey memorabilia, photographs, and books in the rooms that served as Grey's office and study. The museum was sold in 1989 to the National Park Service. It was included in the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River because of Zane Grey's association with the Delaware River and its effect upon the budding writer. Today the museum is self-guided with National Park Service rangers and volunteers available to answer questions and provide for sale a variety of Zane Grey books currently in print.
The Dorflinger-Suydam Wildlife Sanctuary is a 600-acre property with hiking and nature trails. It is home to the Dorflinger Glass Museum and the Wildflower Music Festival. On Thursday, August 21, Honesdale’s Ab Rutherford will talk about the “Life of Major David McKelvy Peterson, World War I Flying Ace.” Dorflinger glass museum curator Hank Loftus will talk about the United States Mint and American coinage on Thursday, September 18.
