  • PALMYRA TWP (Wayne) - The second annual Canal Festival is planned at the D&H Canal Park at Lock 31, Saturday, August 23.
Celebrate Wayne County's heritage connected with the Delaware & Hudson (D&H) Canal Company. the Wayne County Historical Society opened the Canal Park in 2013, one mile west of Hawley along Route 6. There is a full mile of canal towpath suitable for walking, a wide canal basin, stone remnants of a lock and a canal-era inn that served canal boat families as well as the general populace in the 19th Century.
During the Canal Festival, which runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., there will live music, carriage rides on the towpath, commercial vendors and non-profit info tents, children’s activities including a petting zoo, canal store with authors signing their books, and food. There are also demonstrations planned of blacksmithing, quilting, spinning, weaving and more.
The Stourbridge Lion "cub" will even be running!
There is no admission cost. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and spend the day.
    ••• Tree identification
New for this year's Canal Festival is the theme of trees, one of the park's natural resources.
Volunteers have identified and labeled 20 different kinds of trees, mostly on the Towpath Trail for self guided walks. Forester Craig Olver will guide  tree identification walks starting at noon and 1 p.m. Wood worker extraordinaire, Robert Green will demonstrate timber frame construction, throughout the festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
If you are interested in volunteering that day and/or be a festival sponsor, e-mail Sally Talaga at sltalaga@gmail.com.
Future plans at the site, as funding allows, includes restoration of the interior of the building for a living history museum; a pavillion replicating a full-scale canal boat and trail extension.
