Wallenpaupack Area needed three overtimes to defeat Honesdale in an Electrifying Week One LFC battle
Reshawn Battle did his best Walter Payton impression, diving over a host of Honesdale defenders in the third overtime, to give Wallenpaupack Area a heart-stopping Lackawanna Football Conference win over Honesdale Friday night.
Battle soared into the endzone on third down from three yards out, giving the visiting Buckhorns a 26-20 victory in this scintillating Week One encounter.
"I honestly don't know what to say," an emotionally and physically drained Dr. Mark Watson said just moments after the game. "You just have to tip your hat to Honesdale because they played a heck of a game, especially in the second half.
"Our kids showed a ton of heart and resilience, though. They never quit. Every time Honesdale came up with a big play, they came up with a bigger one. I'm incredibly proud of them."
The Hornets were paced by the play of Josh Burkavage. A senior captain who starts on both sides of the ball, Burkavage was outstanding defensively at linebacker and offensively at running back.
"Josh Burkavage came to play today, no question about it," Honesdale Coach Jim Ludwig said. "He really took it to another level in the second half. He's has such an amazing work ethic and he's in tremendous shape. I think Josh is going to have an outstanding season."
Both teams will be back in action next Friday night.
Paupack makes its 2014 home debut with a non-league game against Dallas, while Honesdale hits the road for a Week Two LFC encounter with North Pocono.
