Hawley, Pa. -

To honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Waynepeace invites the public to hear his famous speech about the Vietnam war presented one year before he was assassinated.

The event will take place at 7 pm, Friday, April 4 at the Hawley Methodist Church on 315 Church Street in Hawley.

“A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death.” Dr. Martin Luther King’s words are as relevant today as when he first spoke them in his famous speech over forty years ago at Riverside Church in New York City on April 4, 1967. He was murdered one year later on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, TN, where he was supporting striking garbage workers.

King was viciously attacked at the time of his speech for being unpatriotic, but now we can see that King’s insight into the heart of America’s problem was exactly on the mark. Today, America is 40 years closer to the spiritual death that King talked about.
