A date has been picked and plans are underway for the Smokin’ 500 Soap Box Derby. This fun for all ages annual event is scheduled for Saturday, June 14 starting at noon on Church Street, Hawley.
Formerly known as the Hawley 500, this year’s event is named after “Smokey” Austin who passed away last year and was a huge supporter of the two previous Hawley 500 Soap Box Derby events. The brainchild of Steve Smith, owner of The Falls Port Inn & Steakhouse, the Smokin’ 500 will add additional non-profit vendors along the “track” such as local churches to benefit from the attendance of racers, sponsors and spectators.
There are three levels of sponsorship in addition to businesses providing possible derby cars to drive. The Winners Circle $500 Sponsorship (limited to six sponsors) includes an advertisement in The News Eagle, premium website advertisement and link, checkered flag, sponsor provided bale & winner circle banner placement, free vendor space along Church Street and premium logo and business name placement on the official T-shirts. The Finish Line $250 Sponsorship (limited to eight sponsors) includes an advertisement in The News Eagle, second tier website advertising with link, checkered flag, second-tier logo and business name placement on the official T-shirts. The Pit Crew $100 Sponsorship (limited to 20 sponsors) includes an advertisement in The News Eagle, checkered flag, listing on the official “Smokin’ 500” website, business name placement on the official T-shirts.
If participants are only interested in just driving a derby car, there will be a limited number of cars on hand. The drive only entry fee is $10. Non-profit organizations are also welcome to set up a booth or exhibit.
