MOUNT PLEASANT TWP. - The authorities Tuesday, April 11, continue to investigate what appears to be a murder-suicide.
Gaston Gomez, 57, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at about 3:18 p.m. Monday in the kitchen of a residence at 61 Leonard Road, said state police Capt. Christopher Paris. Human remains also were found in a smoldering burn barrel on the roughly 40-acre property.
The remains could be those of Joseph Mastropole, 54, who resided at the residence and who has not been seen in days.
The investigation started yesterday morning after Mastropole’s girlfriend contacted police and asked them to do a welfare check at the residence.
The authorities found Gomez, who claimed to be Mastropole’s roommate, on the property, along with a marijuana grow operation, Paris said.
Police left to obtain a search warrant, and when they returned they heard a single gunshot come from inside the house. They then found Gomez dead.
District Attorney Janine Edwards said no shots were fired by state police and, contrary to reports, there was no standoff at the property.
The investigation is continuing and anyone with information is urged to call state police at 570-253-7126.
