PLEASANT MOUNT - State Police at Honesdale and the Wayne County Coroner’s Office now have a positive identification, established through DNA testing, of the identity of the human remains found April 10.

The previously unidentified human remains discovered within the Joseph Mastropole residence on Leonard Road in Mount Pleasant Township, Wayne County were determined to be, in fact, that of Joseph Mastropole, age 54.

The cause and manner of death are still undetermined at this time. DNA testing on the remains discovered inside the burn barrel on the property are still pending.

The second male at the scene who was discovered deceased inside the residence with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, identified as Gaston Gomez, had been a longtime friend of Mastropole and was living with him for the past year. There were indicators that both men were involved in the marihuana growing operation on the property.

Wayne County Coroner Edward Howell released his findings on May 23.
The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information, please contact PSP Honesdale at 570-253-7126.
