WAYNE COUNTY - A Pike County man was report dead at the scene of an airplane crash near the Cherry Ridge Airport, Thursday evening, July 6.
Edward Howell, Wayne County Coroner, confirmed the death of 52 year old Joseph P. Kinney of Dingmans Ferry.
The decedent was pronounced dead at the scene of the “fatal aviation incident” at 6:08 p.m. by the coroner. An autopsy was planned.
The scene was a wooded area in Cherry Ridge Township near the Cherry Ridge airport, which is southwest of Honesdale off Owego Turnpike.
The small plane reportedly came down around 4:30 p.m. Officials were cited by WNEP-TV as stating that Kinney was the pilot of the aircraft.
The coroner stated that Kinney was the only person aboard the plane.
White Mills Fire Department, along with their EMS, were dispatched to the area of 2165 Owego Turnpike.
The Associated Press reported that Kinney was piloting his Morrissey 2150A aircraft.
National Transportation Safety Board will reportedly be investigating the crash.
Kinney was one of 13 Pike County, PA residents on the FAA registry. There are 62 registered plane owners in Wayne County.
