GREENE TWP. - Promised Land State Park is hosting a CCC and Local History Day event on Saturday, August 12 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Masker Museum complex. The focus of this event is to honor the men who worked for the Civilian Conservation Corp in the ’30’s as well as to highlight our colorful local history.

The CCC was created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to reclaim land decimated by poor land practices that contributed to the Great Depression. These young men were put to work planting trees, preventing forest fires and building structures used to this day in our state parks, including Promised Land State Park.

Former CCC boys will be present to answer questions from the public and to share their stories. Cake and coffee will be served while Tom Calinan serenades with music inspired by the CCC era.

Local historical societies will be present with informational pamphlets as well as books on local history for sale, the Masker Museum will be open with artifacts not normally on display to the visiting public, and there will be a living history site tour of historic CCC structures.

Blacksmith demonstrations will be performed with antique tools on display, and Peter Osborne, author of “Images of America – Promised Land State Park” will be conducting a lecture and book signing. There will be a “Local History Trivia Contest” to test your knowledge of local history – get a free “Hiram Frisbee” for participating and win a signed copy of Peter Osborne’s book! GPS tours of local areas of historical significance will be available.

Food for purchase will be available from Roadside Bistro. Admission to this event is free.
