SCRANTON - The Diocese of Scranton learned Wednesday, August 30, that the investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police into Father Martin M. Boylan has been closed because of a refusal on the part of the alleged victim to testify.

While civil authorities have made this determination, the ecclesiastical process in Father Boylan’s case continues. “Father Boylan's status as a priest removed from ministry with his faculties to exercise priestly ministry suspended, continues to remain unchanged,” said Bill Genello, Executive Director of Communications, Diocese of Scranton.

Father Boylan served eight years at St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale, before being transferred in June 2009 to the parish in Towarda.

Diocesan officials received an allegation of sexual misconduct involving a minor against the Reverend  Boylan. on April 1. The allegation was reported to have occurred when the accuser, now an adult, was a minor. In response to the allegation, the Diocese of Scranton immediately notified the Wayne County District Attorney’s Office, the county where the abuse was reported to have taken place.
