HAWLEY - Hawley Public Library’s Unique Pathways program series presents Brian and Lisa Woods, owners of Beach Lake Bakery, on Thursday, September 28 at 5:30 p.m. at the library.
Brian was born and raised in Manchester, England. He began in the baking industry at the age of 16 and after various jobs became, at age 24, the youngest production manager at Gregg’s Bakery, a major bakery chain in England.
Lisa Rubin was born in New Haven, CT, and was raised in Manhattan. Lisa majored in French and German in college, but has always enjoyed cooking and baking. Lisa worked in New York City at The World Trade Center and at Friends Seminary, a Quaker school in lower Manhattan.
Lisa and Brian met on a kibbutz in the Golan Heights in Israel in 1980. They married in 1981 and moved to New Jersey, where Brian worked in the bakery business and became interested in artisan bread baking.
Their first bakery, The Catskill Cookie Company, opened in Narrowsburg. New York. A few moves followed and the couple settled in Beach Lake, opening Beach Lake Bread in 2003. Today the enterprise has expanded to a bakery built next to their home and reopened in 2012 as Beach Lake Bakery.
During the talk, hear the many twists and turns in the story of how these two energetic entrepreneurs followed their dream to produce artisan breads and fine baked goods – and sample some of their products.
