Betty J. Mang of Honesdale passed away on Monday, December 4, 2017, after a two-year battle with cancer.  She was 73.

Born in Kenton, Ohio on January 31, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Donna Mae Wasserbeck. A member of the local 4-H, she told many stories about showing her steers in state fair competitions with her brother. She also had many fond memories of playing the trombone in the marching band. After graduating from Richwood High School, Ohio in 1962, she earned a Bachelor's degree in education with a Mathematics concentration from Wilmington College, Ohio. This was where she met the late Harold E. Mang, Jr. After they married in Essex, Ohio on July 3, 1966, they lived in Fairborn, Ohio, where Betty taught mathematics until the couple moved to Cherry Ridge, Pennsylvania in 1969. She substituted for both the Wayne Highlands and Narrowsburg Schools until Wallenpaupack Area School District hired her to create and run the Math Lab. This teaching situation permitted her to touch many lives, and numerous students remember her patient and devoted and fun-loving demeanor. An exceptional educator, Betty was well respected by administration, faculty, and staff. Even after retiring in 2006, she continued to substitute until 2013. Betty earned a Master's degree from Marywood University and also taught night school at Lackawanna Junior College.

After retiring, she spent time with her family and enjoyed watching her grandchildren and sharing her love and appreciation for the outdoors. Particularly, she enjoyed hunting and fishing with her entire family. Frequently, she traveled to Canada with them so that they could experience the excitement of Walleye and Northern Pike fishing. Additionally, she was an avid Canasta player and spent many Wednesdays playing Canasta with her dear friends.

Betty was a Past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star Chapter, Hamlin, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Phi Chapter and a congregant of the Central United Methodist Church.

Betty is survived by her brother, Don Wasserbeck and wife Vonnie, Marion, Ohio; daughter, Mary Lisa Gilson and husband, Michael; son, James J. Mang and wife, Janelle; son, Joseph J. Mang and wife, Kristen all of Honesdale; five grandchildren: Grace Gilson, Johnathan Gilson, Nathan Mang, Lilianna Mang, and Noah Mang; and many nieces and nephews.
