HAWLEY - The 6th annual Hawley Spring Run - A Race Against Suicide is set for Sunday, June 3rd in Bingham Park. Offering the exhilaration and camaraderie offered at any 5K run/walk, this event also provides an opportunity to raise hope for individuals and families addressing suicide.
Registration takes place between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at the bandstand. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. from Park Place, alongside Bingham Park. The event is held rain or shine; no dogs are allowed except for service dogs.

This is a timed 5K with trophies awarded to the 1st place overall male and female runners, and 1st, 2nd and 3rd place medals for runners in a host of age groups, from children to participants over 80.

Walkers compete for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons.

Every registrant receives a free raffle ticket.

The course, which winds through Hawley, offers moderate road, sidewalk and grass surfaces.
Proceeds from this non-profit will provide a scholarship for a graduating senior from Wallenpaupack Area High School. The criteria includes a 250 word essay on suicide prevention and awareness. The High School’s guidance office has more information.

The scholarship will be awarded at the High School.

A portion of the proceeds will also benefit the Northeast Suicide Prevention Initiative, a non-profit organization.

T-shirts, refreshments, music and raffles will be available, as well as material on suicide prevention.

Hawley Spring Run - A Race Against Suicide was founded by Chuck and Sheila Whitman in memory of their Tyler Whitman, who took his own life on March 2, 2012. Tyler, a Wallenpaupack graduate, was in his freshman year at college.

The popular Hawley Spring Run brought out 149 participants in 2017, despite rainy weather. Last year, enough funds were raised for three scholarships at $1,000 each.

Pre-registration in paper form is available at the Hawley Public Library or the Scranton Running Center or by calling 570-689-3345.

Online registrations may be made at eventbrite.com or at neparunner.com.
