The Chamber of the Northern Poconos, which hosts the annual July 4th fireworks at Lake Wallenpaupack, is planning an even bigger display for 2018 than in years past.
PALMYRA TWP. (Pike) - The Chamber of the Northern Poconos, which hosts the annual July 4th fireworks at Lake Wallenpaupack, is planning an even bigger display for 2018 than in years past.
“Lake Wallenpaupack has become known for its annual fireworks display, but this year’s display will far surpass previous years,” said Debbie Gillette, Chamber Executive Director. “After years of dedicated interest and financial commitment from area business owners and residents, the Lake Region of the Pocono Mountains can proudly boast that this is one of the best fireworks displays in the area.”
This year’s display, she said, will still be kept to a time frame of 30 to 35 minutes, but the fireworks will be spaced closer together, giving a nearly continuous show. They will also be higher and larger. She said that they are hoping that they will be seen even further away.
“There will be more fireworks, a lot more,” she said.
“This is the Chamber’s way of saying thanks and giving back to the community,” she said, acknowledging the good support they have received over the years in financing the display.
This year the Chamber’s Fireworks Committee worked hard at raising sponsorships, with the aim at enlarging the display. They raised enough business sponsorships, she said, that in 2018 they did not have to ask the community for individual donations.
International Fireworks Manufacturing will provide the display. The Chamber has worked with this company for many years. The cost of the 2018 display, coupled with related expenses including insurance, signage and security, amounts to nearly $40,000, Gillette said. Their expenses in recent years cost close to $26,000.
She pointed out that the fireworks, drawing thousands to our lake region restaurants, merchants, marinas, campgrounds and lodgings, the fireworks have become an important part of the lake culture.
Where to watch
This display is fired near the shores of Lake Wallenpaupack, at Wallenpaupack Area High School, and will begin at approximately 9:30 p.m. Parking will be available in the High School lots, and the bleachers will be open to spectators at approximately 7 p.m. The Middle & Primary School parking lots are also available.
Viewing the fireworks will still be available at the dike and by boat on the Lake, as well. Please note: Specific traffic patterns near the display will be in place to ease congestion thus encouraging safer travel. The Chamber asks that the public please pay close attention to the security personnel directing traffic.
The display is actually on the 4th of July, although that’s a Wednesday this year, she said. “A lot of people asked if it was going to be on the weekend.” The rain date is July 5.
The Wallenpaupack Fireworks are made possible entirely through donations and sponsorship, Gillette said, adding, “The Chamber thanks all businesses and residents who have donated in the past.”
Major business sponsors to date include (in no particular order) Lake Region IGA, Lake Region Beer Store, Lighthouse Harbor Marina, Davis R. Chant Realtors, The Dime Bank, Sterling Marina, Wayne County Tourism, Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau, Sterling Marina, 1st Klas Marina, Wallenpaupack Marine Trades Association, Gresham’s Chop House, Wayne Bank, Settlers Hospitality, Honesdale National Bank, The Boat Shop, Woodloch Resort, Peoples Security Bank, Bold Gold Media Group, and Encore Outdoor LLC.
“We encourage community businesses to support this important annual tradition,” Gillette said.
She stated that donations are still needed for the 2018 display and are greatly appreciated.
“This support adds up and is vital to our fundraising efforts,” Gillette stressed.

The 4th of July fireworks at Lake Wallenpaupack have been held every year since 1975, hosted by the Hawley Lake Wallenpaupack Chamber of Commerce.
Gillette said that they are looking forward to a grand celebration in eight years, when in 2026 the lake will be 100 years old. She said they may have a second fireworks display or an even bigger event. The Chamber, she said, is hoping to build on the momentum this year and continue each year with a larger display.
