A long-time, former office manager for a dental office in Hamlin has been charged for allegedly keeping insurance money totaling over $13,000.
State Police, Honesdale barracks charged Sharon Swartz, age 58, of Jefferson Township for Theft, Theft by Deception, Theft by Failure to Make Required Disposition of Funds, Forgery and receiving Stolen Property. In all, she is facing 32 felonies.
According to police, Swartz was the office manager at the Scrimali/ Rathchford/ Hanyon Dental offices in Hamlin for 14 years. Since 2006, she allegedly was cashing insurance checks from, the dental office and keeping the money for herself. This involved cashing 28 insurance checks totaling in excess of $13,000.
State Police were first alerted by the dental firm on March 11, 2011. According to the affidavit filed by Trooper Wayne Thomas, Swartz had been confronted by two of the dentists on March 7 with their suspicion that she had been stealing money and cashing checks written out to them. Swartz allegedly admitted to the theft over the past several years, particularly in February 20067 and the summer of 2010.
The victims hired a fraud investigation company to conduct an internal probe into the matters at the dental office.
Swartz had been employed by the dental firm since November 1997, and was terminated on March 7, 2011.
A search warrant was served by State Police on Honesdale National Bank to examine the checks cashed by Swartz and funds subsequently deposited into another account.
State Police alleged that Swartz provided a written confession on December 23rd. Charges were filed on Jan. 31, 2012. She allegedly admitted to using the signature stamp of the victims to cash insurance checks for her own use, and manipulated cash payments to keep some of the cash and entering false payments or no payments at all.
Swartz was arraigned in front of District Judge Bonnie Carney and released on $30,000 unsecured bail. The accused as a preliminary hearing scheduled for Feb. 8.
