Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Francis Patrick (Bud) Farrell died Nov. 2, 2009, All Souls Day, at the Geno Merli Veterans Center in Scranton.
Col. Farrell leaves behind his beloved wife of 60 years, Barbara Hunt Farrell, six children, Lee Ann Farrell Kilareski (Cape May, NJ.); Lance Hunt Farrell (Houston, TX.); Colonel Michael Sean Farrell (Jenks, OK.); Melissa Jean Paglieri (Lake Ariel); Patricia Frances Farrell Shermot (Reading); and Barbara Ann Farrell Hall (Paupack). Lt. Col. Farrell has 16 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
He is survived by his youngest brother, Eugene Farrell of Baltimore, MD. Lt. Col. Farrell was predeceased by his brothers Larry and Robert and a sister, Mary.
Born in White Haven to Elesmere and Frank Farrell, Col. Farrell was a graduate of East Manchunk High School, attended East Stroudsburg College, and holds a bachelor of Science degree from Columbia University in New York.
Farrell served in World War II and both the Korean and Vietnam Wars as a fighter pilot. Farrell is a highly decorated airman receiving the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and the Distinguished Flying Cross among many other awards and recognition.
Upon retiring from the service, Farrell owned a contracting and excavating business, J.P. Farrell and Sons, and an American Service Station.
Farrell was active in the Freedom Movement, co-owner of the “Cattleman’s Gazette” and hosted a political radio program weekly. Farrell was a contributing author to several publications and appeared in “Life” magazine.
Farrell enjoyed reading, flying, and above all his family.
Funeral Services will be at 10:30 am, Saturday, Nov. 7 at the Edward F. Melber Funeral Home, 524 Center St., Jim Thorpe, followed by a Mass of the Christian Burial at 11 am in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 180 West Broadway, Jim Thorpe, with the Rev. James J. Ward officiating. Interment will be in the Parish cemetery with full Military honors. Call Friday 7 pm until 9 pm and on Sat. from 10 am to 10:30 am.
