Walter R. Runyon, 75, of Hawley died unexpectedly Sunday, January 10, 2010, at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Honesdale. Born July 28, 1934, in Blooming Grove, he was the son of the late Robert and Evelyn (Huda) Runyon.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, the former Joan Balbershak.
After attending Scranton State School for the Deaf and Mt. Airey School in Philadelphia, Mr. Runyon worked with his father as a housepainter for many years. Later he was a Scranton Tribune linotype operator for 22 years. He was an avid basketball player with the Scranton School for the Deaf and the Hawley Legion Amateur Basketball Team. In addition, he was an avid fisherman and he participated in many fishing tournaments with the Deaf Fisherman’s Group.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one sister, Anna May Sabatelle of Scranton, and many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, Jan. 13, from 7 to 9 pm at Teeters’ East Chapel, 505 Church St, Hawley, PA. The funeral will be Thursday, Jan. 14, at 10 am at BVM Queen Of Peace Roman Catholic Church, 314 Chestnut Ave, Hawley, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Burial will be in B.V.M. Queen Of Peace Cemetery, Hawley.
