Wallenpaupack Area's varsity boys cross country team set for states

Wallenpaupack Area's boys varsity cross country team has its sights set on a Top Ten performance at this weekend's PIAA State Championships.

Led by senior star Tyler Wirth, the Buckhorns will arrive on the scene at Hershey as the undefeated and reigning District Two Class AAA champs.

Wirth simply dominated the boys race Wednesday at Lakeland, cruising to an easy win. Tyler covered the muddy 3.1-mile course in a blistering time of 16:49.5, good for a 13-second bulge over his closest challenger.

“It's been a great season for us so far as a team and I think we have the potential to do big things at states,” Wirth said just moments after crossing the line.

“My teammates really stepped up today. They've done a great job all season long. I can't wait to get to Hershey. If we run the way we have been lately, we could be a Top Ten team.”

Dieter Burckes was the Class AAA runner-up, coming in at 17:02. Kyle Kellstrom (18:02) and Nick Lancaster (18:10) also cracked the Top Ten at districts, finishing fifth and ninth, respectively.

Jack Monte (17th, 18:43) and Seth Brown (19th, 18:49) finished inside the Top 20 as well.

The PIAA State Meet is slated for Saturday, Nov. 3 at Hershey.
