This year’s opening day of trout season, April 18, on the Lackawaxen River, will be a monstrous success. Each year the anglers on the Lackawaxen River have had great luck, and this year will be no exception.

Once again, due to the initiative of the Business Owners of Lackawaxen Township, there will be an extra bonus of 100 monster trout stocked in the Lackawaxen River. These will be in addition to thousands of trout stocked by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

The Business Owners of Lackawaxen Township and G. Anderson Homes are sponsoring the third annual Monster Trout Derby, open to all anglers, with approximately $2,500 in prizes being offered. There is no entry fee for the public and no pre-registration. All that an angler needs to do is catch any one of the 100 monster trout being stocked in the Lackawaxen River between Hawley and the Village of Lackawaxen.

These trout are tagged with a number that corresponds with the list of sponsors. Simply take the fish to Angler’s Roost sporting goods store on Scenic Drive in Lackawaxen or to Wallenpaupack Sport Shop at Routes 6 and 590 in Hawley. At the sports shops, the fish will be weighed-in and certified. The angler will have his picture taken for the press.

The contest will continue throughout the entire trout season on the Lackawaxen River. The prizes will be available from opening day of trout season through the end of the season on Feb. 28, 2010.

These trout are approximately 21 to 28 inches in length and weigh between 5 and 10 pounds. A mix of brown trout, brook trout and rainbow trout will be stocked. These are truly trophy trout.

Last year 100 monster trout were stocked in a 14 mile stretch from The Settlers’ Inn in Hawley to the Zane Grey Bridge in Lackawaxen. Sixty-eight of the 100 were caught during the trout season, and no fish was caught more than half a mile from its stocking point. Thirty-two fish were not caught, and are still in the river.

Anglers may catch and release a trout. They may remove the tag and turn that in for their prize.
