Hawley, Pa. -

Saturday, May 10 the Lady Buckhorn Soccer Team hosted the Blue Knights of Wyoming Seminary and fell in the contest 7-1.

The Lady Bucks now have a record of 8-7-3 and will play in a District II playoff game on Wednesday, May 14 (the opponents and seeding came out Monday night after this paper was published).

Before the game, the Senior Lady Bucks were honored for their time and dedication over the years in a traditional Senior Day format. Brianna Zeiler, Ashley Woods, Sara Olson and Kaysey Beury will all be leaving the Big Lake next year and missed on the playing fields.

Brianna Zeiler, daughter of Brenda and Eric, has been a member of the Varsity Soccer Team since her freshman year. She has been a member of the Tennis and Basketball Teams, a class secretary, on the student council and in S.A.D.D. and the Local History Club. Zeiler is also a member of the National Honor Society. She plans on attending Penn State and is undecided as to what major she will choose.

Ashley Woods, daughter of John and Martha, has spent two years playing soccer, earning her Varsity Letter her freshman year. She has been the team manager for two years as well and spent one year on the JV Football Cheerleading squad and in her sophomore year was a Basketball Cheerleader. She plans on attending Lock Haven University and majoring in Marine Biology.

Sara Olson, daughter of John, has been a four-year member of the Varsity Team. She has also been a member of the Tennis Team (9th grade), the President of S.A.D.D., a yearbook editor, a blood drive volunteer and in Skills USA. She plans on attending Indiana University of Pennsylvania and majoring in Nursing.

Kaysey Beury, daughter of Wesley, has been on the Soccer team for years. She has also been on the Field Hockey Team, a member of the yearbook committee and in the National Honor Society. She plans on attending Keystone College and is undecided as to which major she will choose.

The Game

The game itself was much closer than the scoreboard reflected at the final whistle with the Blue Knights scoring four times in the last 20 minutes of play. Wyoming Seminary did jump out to an early lead at the 3:20 mark when Erin Hannigan put one in the net and then 25 minutes later they struck again when Najia Hasan scored, but the Bucks never gave up against the undefeated team. The two goal deficit would be taken into the intermission and they would find the net in the second half.

‘Paupack’s Jillian Alderfer took a loose ball from about 40 yards out and weaved her way to just outside the 18 yard line when she fired a left-footed shot into the lower right hand corner of the net. The goal came at the 46:08 mark in the game.

Heather Michael was in the net for the Lady Bucks and was tested time and time again, facing an onslaught of shots that had the looks of scoring chances. Michael came up big several times in the half. At the 32:24 mark she made a diving play to her right pushing the ball wide of the cage. Less than two minutes later she did the same thing, this time to her left and saving a potential goal and yet again when she had a shot fired on-goal that she tipped over the top crossbar.

The onslaught of shots became to frequent and too much for the Lady Buck Defenders as the Blue Knights were eventually able to score four times in the last 20 minutes, winning 7-1.

Wallenpaupack was outshot by a margin of 20-5, with Michael making 13 saves on the day. Wyoming Seminary’s Alena Polenska made four saves.
