Strike one! Strike Two! A frozen rope into left-center for a stand-up double! The crowd goes wild, the grandstands are rushing the field and the winning slugger is standing proudly on the second-base bag, rubbing his knee, grinning from ear to ear, and just 56-years young. You’re never too old to play baseball. You’re never too old to enjoy America’s favorite past-time and even if your varsity days are long gone, there is a new league forming in Newfoundland. The only catch is that you must be at least 50 years of age to play, and it’s free.

“We’re trying to get ballplayers who are over 50 years and older to play baseball again,” explained Steve Szakal, founder of the new league forming in Newfoundland.

The games will begin in May, at the township fields in Newfoundland, on Sundays at noon. There is no fee to register and equipment has been donated to use for the games.

“The purpose of this league is to bring back those days when we were kids playing baseball and talking about Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, and all our favorite players. The league will help keep us active in a fun light competitive tournament,” said Szakal.

Games will be nine innings with some modified rules such as no stealing and no bunting, but this is baseball so there will be plenty of fast-paced exciting action on the diamond!

“Baseball has been America’s ‘national pastime’ for generations, but to really find the heart of what makes baseball so precious to many Americans one needs to visit the baseball field in Newfoundland on Sunday afternoon,” added Szakal.
