Kingston, Pa. -

Wallenpaupack and Abington Heights took to the courts for the second time this year with the Comets getting the better of the Bucks in their first meeting winning 3-2. Things wouldn’t end much differently in Kirby Park for the finals of the District 2 Class AAA Tennis Championships on Monday. The Bucks fell 3-2 after reaching the finals on a 3-2 win over Hazleton.

The Bucks were up 2-1 at one point in the contest when Chris Miller won his number 2 singles match over Scott Monsky; 6-4, 5-7. 6-0. Miller has earned the #6 seed for the Singles Tournament and will face the winner of Chris Connelly (Williamsport) and Brian Reese (Pittston Area) in the tournament.

Wes Kolodziej fell to the Comet’s Barrett Wentworth 6-1, 6-3 to even the score at one all and then the dynamic doubles duo of Kevin Alderfer and Josh Wentz went to work on their opponents, Ken Doolittle and Matt Garbin. The ‘Paupack pairing took home the close match 7-5, 6-4 and put the Bucks up a point; 2-1.

The number 2 doubles slot for the Bucks was Rafael Diniz and Kyle Schneider and they eventually fell to Ryan Kane and Dan Kazmierski after making a comeback and winning the second set. They lost 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 and it was all tied up and brought the final outcome to the number 1 singles players still out on the court.

Chris Finney for the Bucks and Josh Palmer for Abington Heights. The two fought it out like an old match between Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe with tempers flaring, words being exchanged and a line judge being called in several times to cool things down. Finney took the first set, winning 6-4, but that nagging injury to his back was obviously creeping into his style of play. After attacking an overhead shot at the net, Finney went down to the ground, but toughed it out and played on.

The injury was definitely taking its toll on the Buckhorn player as he lost the second set 6-2 and was in need of the on-call trainer at several times throughout the contest.

In the third set the back was all but gone for Finney as he was fighting through a pain that would not go away and he fell 6-1.

Finney is ranked #4 in the coming singles tournament and scheduled to play the winner of Nick Rall (Williamsport) and Matt Breslin (Hazleton Area) but it is unclear at this point if he will be able to play.
