This week’s suggestions include going to the theater to see “The Rite” or another film, observing the anniversary of the Challenger disaster, celebrating National Puzzle Day and more.

1. The big movies this week aren’t family-friendly, but if parents need a night out, consider “The Rite,” a PG-13 horror/thriller starring Anthony Hopkins; or “The Mechanic,” an R-rated thriller starring Jason Statham. Opening in select cities this week is the Oscar-nominated film “Biutiful,” an R movie starring Javier Bardem.

2. Friday is the anniversary of the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, in which teacher Christa McAuliffe and six astronauts were killed. Some places will he holding informational events about the disaster, so check the newspaper or library for more information.

3. Saturday is National Puzzle Day, so why not arrange to have a game night? You can play any kind of game that involves problem solving, and ask your friends to each bring a game so you can pick from the best.

4. The NFL Pro Bowl takes place Sunday at 7 p.m. EST on Fox. In advertisements for the all-star game, Fox has been promoting its expanded use of microphones on players and coaches, so the sideshow will be interesting even if the game isn’t. Find out more at the official site, www.nfl.com/probowl.

5. If you’re not into the Pro Bowl, on Sunday night you can tune in instead to the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The SAGs will be broadcast at 8 p.m. EST on TBS and TNT. Find out more at www.sagawards.org.
