POTATO FAMINE/ US ECONOMY: Readers draw parallels between Irish potato famine, US economy  -- “Many people who have read my book have said – without any prompting from me – that it reminds them of things that are going on now. Our modern arguments about welfare, entitlements, taxes and immigration really began with the Irish famine,” he said. Valerie A. Russo/ The Patriot Ledger (Mass.)

JIM HILLIBISH: Is Mexican Coca Cola better for you?  -- Perhaps "Retro Coke" is a better description. This supposedly is old-fashioned Coke made from pure cane sugar, not high-fructose corn syrup of the American version. The heavy-glass bottles with painted labels are reminiscent of the Coke bottles of the 1960s. Canton (Ohio) Repository

STAY TUNED: It's aliens in New Jersey on 'The Neighbors' - If TV has taught us anything about aliens, it's that they will either conquer Earth in a violent wave of genocide or they will take human form and try to live among us, usually with comic results. “The Neighbors” is about the second kind of extraterrestrial visitor. In this new sitcom from ABC, aliens move into a townhouse community in New Jersey. By Melissa Crawley, GHNS.

TURKEY FEDERATION: Turkey federation joins efforts to bring back bobwhites -- Brent Lawrence, director of communications for the NWTF, said the number of wild turkeys nationwide dwindled to about 30,000 in the early 1900s. Today, that number has grown to 7 million. Chris Young/ The State Journal-Register (Ill.)

HUNTERS/ DROUGHT: Drought means questions for hunters -- Mike Wefer isn’t sure how the drought of 2012 will factor into the number of quail and pheasants that hunters will see this fall. “The short answer is we’re not sure,” said Wefer, agriculture and grassland wildlife program manager for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Chris Young/ The State Journal-Register (Ill.)

HEATHER HARRIS: Keeping my faith in the Patriots  -- The New England Patriots, my hometown team. For many reasons, I think I’ve taken my team’s winning ways for granted. I just assumed they would always win, that they would make it to the post-season. That Tom Brady would never age. Patriot Ledger (Mass.)

GEORGE LITTLE: Old guns are like old friends -- The pump shotgun that comes out of my safe first during hunting season is showing its age. The checkering on the forearm is almost gone, worn smooth from being cycled countless times. The bluing on the receiver shows the outline of my right hand. I’ve carried it on hundreds of hunts. The State Journal-Register (Ill.)

COLLEGE FOOTBALL NATION: ‘Coach of the century’ Bill Snyder working his magic again - Bill Snyder is a miracle worker. It's been more than 20 years since he first took over as head coach at Kansas State, so it’s faded a little from memory, but in 1989 when he arrived in Manhattan there was no greater dead-end place in all of college football. There were three coaches in four years before he arrived in 1989, and they had a combined record of 3-40-1. The Wildcats didn't win a game in 1987 or 1988. By Eric Avidon, MetroWest, Mass.
