PALMYRA TWP. (Pike) - Brookfield Renewable has been generating electricity around the clock to keep the level of Lake Wallenpaupack down, during the extremely rainy season the region has been experiencing.
The topic came up at the November 26 meeting of the Lake Wallenpaupack Watershed Management District (LWWMD).
“We’re super high,” Katie Lester, district board member representing Brookfield, said in response to a general inquiry about current lake levels.
As of Monday morning, December 3 the level was 1183.5 feet. The targeted level for December 1 is 1182.0. Brookfield measured the level at 1184.3 on November 26.
“We’ve been running around the clock since October 29,” she said, referring to the power generators at Kimbles. “We’ve had eight inches of water since we came back online after the outage, which is eight feet of lake level. We came out of outage at 1184.” A month later, they were at the same level, due to the continuous release of water down the flow line to the power plant turbines.
In the last 30 days, she summed, they have had eight inches of rain and Brookfield has been able to keep the level steady.
The plant outage occurs in October for maintenance. The outage lasted three weeks, which Lester said was similar to when PPL owned and operated the hydroelectric facility. During the outage the lake came up five and a half feet.
Meg Welker pointed out that the region is 20 inches above normal rainfall for 2018. This is the most since 2011, Lester said.
“So completely understand that I sympathize with the people who can’t get work done around the shoreline,” Lester added.
As of Thursday afternoon, November 27, the lake level had dropped to 1184.1 feet, with the generators continuing to run.
