SCRANTON – The New Year, 2019, opened with Wayne and Pike Counties switching to a new congressional district. On January 3, U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright received the oath of office to serve in the 116th Congress.
The Democratic legislator was elected last year to the newly formed PA-08 congressional district which includes Lackawanna, Wayne, and Pike Counties and portions of Luzerne and Monroe Counties.
This is his fourth term representing part of Northeastern Pennsylvania, but the first in which his district encompasses Wayne and Pike.
Rep. Cartwright released the following statement after the swearing-in ceremony.
“I was honored to be sworn-in today as a Member of 116th Congress. I’m looking forward to the next two years working with my colleagues to promote policies that will benefit and strengthen working-class families by creating jobs and rebuilding America.”
“Northeastern Pennsylvania reflects the make-up and spirit of much of the country. I understand both the hardships and the concerns that many rural and small-town Americans have. What would help is for the Congress to focus on infrastructure rebuilding, shoring up Social Security and Medicare without cuts, making health care more affordable, and reducing the high cost of prescription drugs. I will be a strong advocate for these and other policies geared to restore hope and opportunities for all.”
Cartwright is a member of the House Appropriations Committee, serving on the Subcommittees for Commerce-Justice-Science and Financial Services & General Government. Cartwright is also a member of the House Leadership, serving as Co-Chair of the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee and a member of the Steering and Policy Committee.
Presently he maintains two district offices, with plans to open more.
