As of May, 17 states had laws allowing use of CBD extract for treating severe epilepsy and seizures, and other degenerative conditions.

Cannabidiol — known as CBD — is touted by some health experts as “good for you” for a number of reasons. However, the fact that CBD is an oil product derived from cannabis, which can also be used to make marijuana, is disconcerting for some.

In April Forbes expressed, “… the Drug Enforcement Administration maintains that CBD is definitely still illegal” but also indicated that the DEA is unlikely to pursue prosecuting someone using CBD for health reasons.

What it is
Health magazine in July affirmed that CBD oil is considered non-psychoactive, essentially defined as “not affecting the mind or mental processes.” offers this explanation: “CBD and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) have similar molecular structures, but CBD does not directly stimulate CB1 and CB2, the canonical cannabinoid receptors, like THC does. THC, marijuana’s principal psychoactive component, makes a person feel high by binding to CB1, the most abundant protein receptor in the brain and central nervous system.”

CBD, says Health, is undergoing studies for its possible use in treating autism and seizure disorders. Some swear by its relief of cancer and chemotherapy side effects. Other ongoing scientific research has show CBD may contribute to pain relief, clearing up acne and hydrating skin, the magazine reports.

In April shared that current studies may determine CBD could assist people with neurodegenerative disorders, diseases causing the brain and nerves to deteriorate over time: Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and stroke.

As of May, 17 states had laws allowing use of CBD extract for treating severe epilepsy and seizures, and other degenerative conditions, according to These include Alabama, Georgia, Missouri and North Carolina.

Where you’ll find it
Primarily, CBD is ingested in different forms — namely as gummies — to alleviate anxiety and panic attacks. Other CBD-infused edible forms include chocolate, cake pops, drops and tea. There are also treats, sprays and drops for anxious pets. Beauty products with CBD have also emerged, including lotions, masks, eye creams and lip balms.

Forbes made this statement in its April report: “At best, the law is murky and open to differing interpretations.” Different states have different laws regarding CBD products, and product testing and regulation is sketchy. Seek trusted reviews of any product you are considering, and understand the laws in your state, as well as in any state from which you may be purchasing.
